Research & Innovation at CAMLS
At the USF Health Center for Advanced Medical Learning & Simulation (CAMLS), research is not an abstract pursuit—it is a deliberate act of pursuing better. We create the conditions where discovery is sparked, ideas are challenged, and innovation is tested in environments that reflect the realities of healthcare.
Immersive environments that reveal what matters
Enduring discovery begins with experience. CAMLS provides deeply immersive, clinically authentic environments that allow researchers to observe, test, and understand healthcare as it is practiced—not as it is theorized.
Our facilities enable investigators to:
- Explore human behavior, decision-making, human–device interaction, workflows, and system performance
- Study healthcare challenges in controlled yet realistic clinical settings
- Generate insights that are grounded in experience, context, and evidence
By removing the barriers of live clinical care while preserving realism, CAMLS empowers researchers to discover patterns, uncover gaps, and ask better questions—fueling meaningful advancement in healthcare practice, education, and technology.
A Living Ecosystem for Research & Innovation
CAMLS is more than a facility—it is part of a dynamic research ecosystem at the heart of the Tampa Medical & Research District, where academia, healthcare, and industry converge to advance discovery and innovation.
Within CAMLS, immersive clinical environments are complemented by embedded research expertise through on-site labs, including the Smart Technologies through Advanced Research Lab (STAR Lab) and the Bailey Lab, alongside the USF Health Innovation and Technology Scholars Program, which cultivates emerging talent and supports applied research experiences.
This ecosystem extends beyond CAMLS through close collaboration with regional partners, including the TGH–USF Health 3D Visualization and Printing Lab—a unique partnership between Tampa General Hospital, the USF Health Department of Radiology, and USF Health CAMLS. Together, these connected resources enable advanced visualization, modeling, and prototyping that support research, device development, and translational innovation.
Collectively, these partnerships create a connected environment that accelerates discovery and translates research into practice-ready knowledge—locally, nationally, and globally.
Pursuing Better—Together
Rooted in USF Health’s academic excellence and driven by a commitment to responsible innovation, CAMLS partners with researchers and organizations who are ready to reimagine how healthcare is studied, developed, and delivered.
At CAMLS, discovery is inspired. Ingenuity is pioneered. And better healthcare becomes possible.
