Course Overview
The Clinical Simulation Facilitator course is an intensive program designed to prepare educators and clinical instructors to design, facilitate, and debrief high-quality simulation-based learning experiences. Through experiential learning, guided reflection, and applied simulation pedagogy, participants build skills in facilitation, structured debriefing, and fostering psychological safety to strengthen clinical reasoning, teamwork, and communication in learners.
Course Description
The Clinical Simulation Facilitator course is an intensive four-day faculty development program designed to equip educators and clinical instructors with the knowledge, skills, and confidence required to design, facilitate, and debrief high-quality simulation-based learning experiences. This course moves beyond basic instructional techniques to develop facilitators who can intentionally use simulation as an educational strategy to improve clinical reasoning, teamwork, communication, and systems-based practice.
Participants will engage in a blend of experiential learning, guided discussion, and reflective practice to build a strong foundation in simulation pedagogy. Core areas of focus include effective facilitation techniques, structured debriefing models, and strategies for fostering psychological safety while maintaining educational rigor. Emphasis is placed on developing the facilitator’s ability to translate simulation events into meaningful learning moments that align with clearly defined objectives.
The course also introduces participants to a range of simulation modalities, including task trainers, standardized patients, in situ simulation, and hybrid simulation approaches. Learners will explore how different modalities can be integrated into curricula to meet diverse educational needs and enhance learner engagement. Special attention is given to selecting appropriate simulation formats based on learning objectives, learner level, and institutional resources.
Target Audience
This course is designed for healthcare educators, clinical instructors, and faculty members who are involved in teaching, training, or assessing learners in clinical or academic settings and wish to develop or enhance their expertise in simulation-based education. It is particularly relevant for simulation center faculty, nursing and allied health educators, and clinical staff responsible for interprofessional education or team training initiatives.
The course is appropriate for individuals who are either new to simulation facilitation or seeking to advance their existing skills in scenario design, debriefing, curriculum integration, and program development. Participants should have an interest in improving learner outcomes through structured, simulation-based educational strategies.
Learning Objectives
Apply knowledge of the process of simulation design, including writing learning objectives, scenarios, supporting materials and selection of appropriate simulation modalities.
Develop facilitation skills, including techniques for managing group dynamics, providing feedback and time management.
Explain the process for delivering effective simulations, including technology management, on-the-fly adjustments, participant engagement and debriefing.
Develop skills to successfully evaluate the effectiveness of simulations and identify areas for improvement. This will include process for collecting participant feedback, analyzing results, and modifying simulation to meet learning objectives.
Learning Outcome
Upon completion of the Clinical Simulation Facilitator course, participants will be able to design, facilitate, and debrief simulation-based learning experiences using evidence-based educational strategies.
