Mass Casualty Incident Training (MCIT)

Course Overview

The Mass Casualty Incident Training (MCIT) course prepares healthcare professionals and response teams to manage high-volume, high-acuity emergencies when patient needs quickly exceed available resources. Through a hybrid model of foundational pre-course learning and immersive, high-fidelity simulation, participants build practical skills in incident management, triage, communication, resource allocation, and team- based decision-making under pressure. Designed with the unique realities of rural hospital providers in mind, the course emphasizes adaptable strategies for delivering coordinated, effective care in resource-limited settings during large-scale casualty events.

Preparing Teams. Saving Lives.

The 2-day Mass Casualty Incident Training (MCIT) course is designed to prepare healthcare professionals and response teams to effectively manage high-volume, high-acuity emergencies where patient needs rapidly exceed available resources. Through realistic, high-fidelity simulation experiences, participants will confront the operational, clinical, and logistical challenges inherent in large-scale casualty events and develop the skills required to respond with clarity, coordination, and efficiency under pressure.

Course Description

This hybrid course combines dynamic online learning with immersive, hands-on simulation exercises. To maximize the time for hands-on simulation, we developed the online didactic modules to provide learners with an advanced understanding of the resources, personnel, equipment, processes, and procedures that are necessary for mass casualty incident preparedness, response, and recovery. This original content features internationally recognized experts in the field of disaster preparedness and guest lectures by physicians who led hospital efforts during violent mass casualty incidents. This preparation ensures that participants arrive ready to engage deeply in scenario-based learning rather than introductory instruction.

The in-person component focuses on hands-on, high-fidelity simulations that replicate the unpredictability and complexity of real-world mass casualty incidents. Participants will be placed in structured roles within response teams and must navigate rapidly changing conditions, limited resources, and competing priorities. Scenarios are designed to stress-test both individual clinical judgment and system-level decision-making, emphasizing coordination across disciplines and functions.

Target Audience

Emergency Department physicians, nurses, and Advanced Practice Providers who practice at rural or community hospitals.

Learning Objectives

  • Define critical roles, resources, processes, and procedures within teams during a mass casualty incident.
  • Identify essential administrative processes and best practices for clinical facilities during a mass casualty incident.
  • Apply rapid decision-making, team communication, and application of clinical procedures for mass casualty incidents in a simulated environment.

Learning Outcome

By the end of the course, learners will be able to critically review the information from the prior mass casualty incidents, identify operational and procedural skills necessary for best clinical practices, and develop real-time methods for recovery.
